My wife and I have four children, and we’re trying to build the best school we can for them—and for as many local families as possible.
Seven years ago, we opened Atlas Academy with nothing but a garage full of Montessori materials and a vision. Before that, I was teaching Kindergarten at Brookside Elementary in Dracut, where I spent four years and earned my Master’s in Education.
One day, when our first child was just one year old, I left Brookside on my lunch break and started driving around looking for a place to start a school. I came across a small building on Sladen Street in Dracut, saw a number on the door, and called it. The owner picked up, and—to my surprise—she agreed to let us give it a try. We rented the space, showed up with a U-Haul, and unloaded everything we had collected, hoping someday we’d have a school. There were boxes on the floor, ceiling tiles missing—but in that room, we convinced our very first parent to let us teach their child.
Now, seven years later, Atlas has grown to serve nearly 80 students across six grade levels, from toddlers through 6th grade. In the fall of 2024, we opened a fifth classroom: our Upper Elementary program for 4th through 6th grade. I (Mr. G) am now completing my Montessori Upper Elementary training and serve as the classroom teacher. At the same time, Mrs. G stepped into the classroom for the first time as the lead guide in our Toddler Community, while training at one of the best Montessori toddler programs in the country.
We’re still growing, still learning, and still building. Our long-term dream is to one day move to a larger location and open a Montessori Middle School and High School—the first of its kind in Massachusetts.
What drives us is simple: we’re building the school we want for our own children—and offering it to others who believe in the same thing.
We envision the completion of Maria Montessori’s great project: to discover and build the ideal conditions for human growth from birth to maturity.
Montessori knew her work was unfinished. She entrusted future generations to carry it forward—not as a closed system, but as a living inquiry into the conditions that allow the human personality to flourish.
This is a revolution in education. It is a call to witness what she described as “the emergence of the New Man who will no longer be the victim of events but, thanks to his clarity of vision, will become able to direct and to mold the future of mankind.”
We imagine a future in which children grow into adults who are whole: capable of sustained effort, clear thought, deep feeling, and meaningful work. Education will no longer fragment the mind from the body or the heart from the will. Instead, it will support the full unification of the personality.
This vision reaches its highest expression in the Atlas Homestead, where middle and high school students will study the classics—such as Shakespeare or Euclid—in the mornings, and spend their afternoons running a real business: packaging farm products, designing labels, calculating profits, and resolving customer complaints.
At Atlas Academy, our mission is to build the best school possible—for our children and yours.
Our Montessori guides carefully curate environments and design experiences to engage the hand, heart, and mind of every child, in service of cultivating their personality.
CURATE ENVIRONMENTS: The environment is the classroom, prepared to meet the general developmental needs of children at each stage. A curated environment includes clear structure, purposeful materials, and space for independence and movement.
DESIGN EXPERIENCES: Experiences are designed for each individual child through careful observation. The guide chooses when to offer a lesson, introduce a material, or intervene socially—all in service of the child’s path of self-construction.
HAND, HEART, AND MIND:
These three aspects work together to form the child’s developing personality. Montessori education supports the integration and unification of all three.
We form true partnerships with families through shared understanding and support of their child’s personality.
PARTNERSHIPS BASED ON PERSONALITY: We do not seek alignment based on ideology, lifestyle, or parenting preferences. Our partnership with families is built around one shared commitment: to understand, support, and respect the development of their child’s personality. A true partnership begins when a teacher is able to name and reflect back essential aspects of a child’s personality in ways that feel deeply known and emotionally true to the parent. The parent, in turn, brings valuable insight and context, and together we build trust through ongoing shared understanding of the child.
This mission is sustained by:
Attracting, retaining, and developing Montessori guides who honor each child’s personality
HONORING THE PERSONALITY: At Atlas, our staff are united by one essential commitment: to honor, support, and guide the development of each child’s personality. To honor a child’s personality means to see them—to recognize, name, respect, and support who they are and who they are becoming. Our guides are diverse in their personal beliefs and teaching styles, but they are unified in their commitment to honoring each child’s developing personality and in their commitment to Montessori’s scientific pedagogy.
Building a Montessori-aligned community of families
Operational excellence driven by strong systems and honest talk—indicated by full enrollment, a waitlist, and over 90% retention
